Ellicottville and Western New York are host to many great adventures, tours, trails to enjoy the sunshine. Art Roscoe Cross-Country Ski and Mountain Bike Area is located in the Red House area of Allegany State Park. They have an extensive trail system for mountain biking and hiking in the summer and fall. Parking is available at the warming hut outside the area map and trailhead. There are some wider trails as well as single track trails, exclusively for mountain biking or hiking

Bring you own mountain bikes or rent bikes at the Red House Lake boathouse! They are typically have the trails open May through November depending on the trail condiations. Balloons Over Letchworth is the exclusive hot air balloon company to launch from within Letchworth State Park that offers spectacular views of the waterfalls, gorge, and scenery of the “Grand Canyon of the East”. The hot balloon provides breath taking views of the Niagara Falls and Finger Lakes regions for a thrill of a lifetime. See the three amazing waterfalls, the 600 foot clifs of Gennesee river gorge and the amazing park that surrounds it from the sky!

The hot air baloon rides are priced for shared basket with other riders or individual baskets for your group. The tour takes about 3 to 4 hours, with approximatelyh 45 to 60 minutes of flight time. This is a great way to see the valley or have this trip for special occasion.

They operate 7 days a week year round for sunset tours, and have a smaller season for sunrise tours. Flight times vary by season. Tours are through the Liberty Balloon Company. They are about 1 hour away from Ellicottville. The flights orginate from the park itself, so the tour company will give you the exact location. Ellicottville Bike & Bean shop organizes guided / group mountain bike rides around Ellicottville! The ride events are a great way to experience the WNYMBA mountain bike trails surrounding Ellicottville with people who know them. They will post upcoming rides on their facebook page, which include Golden Hill Road State Forest, McCarty State Forest and other scenic rides. Their rides can be long, and usually have a fun gathering afterwards with live music, beverages and burritos back at the Bike & Bean!

The Ellicottbille Bike & Bean repairs bicycles, so if you need a tuneup, tubes, tires or more after the ride... they are the place to fix it. They also make some killer burritos and are home to the Outpost for 42 North Brewing!

HL Enterprises offers helicoptor tours with unmatched access to breathtaking landscapes and natural attractions of western New York, the Southern Tier, northwestern Pennsylvania, and eastern Ohio. They also offer short helicoptor tours at many Ellicottille area events to see the hills in their full fall color. Prices are based on individual rates for an approximatly 20 minute flights.

Tours highlight the beauty of western New York's amazing fall color and other natural features. They also may offer other fights or will be at other events listed on their website. Holiday Valley Resort Chair Lift Rides are a great way to see the valley and enjoy a walk, hike or mountain bike ride on trails around Spruce lake and the resort! The chairlift ride takes guest up to Spruce Lake, where you can enjoy seasonal activites on the lake on weekends. After exploring Spruce Lake, the trails or more, you can walk down the trail or ride back down on the chairlift.

Guest can load their mountain bikes on the lift to ride the trails at the top of the mountain! Mountain bike rentals are available at the Sky High Adventure park or you can bring your own. HoliMont Bike Park has 8 mountain bike trails that make up almost 10 miles of track, and they are building more to come! Their trails consist of Technical Terrain and Freeride Terrain that start from beginner, and go all the way up to expert levels. They offer up-hill lift service for riders and mountain bikes on their Sunset lift with a day lift ticket pass. Riding in the park after hours is at the rider's own risk. Loud Underground mountain bike rentals and service are located in the basement of the Adventure Bound on the Fly shop in town with premium bikes and equipment rentals, for purchase, or can service bikes.

Jake's Rock Overlook and Moutain Bike Trails are some of the best mountain bike trails in the region! The Jakes Rock Extreme Mountain Bike Trail System have trails from the beginner to the most adventurous moutnain bikers! The area is in the New York State Forest and extends in to Pennsylvania.Stand on the rock outcrop to see expansive views of Jackson Bay on the Allegheny Reservoir, Kinzua Dam and the surrounding forest.

There are over 30 miles of trails located on 18 named trails. The traip maps and names are listed on the forest website. Remember the commen sense safety rules, as this is the state forest. Travel in a group, know you location and wear a helmet. Bring food, water, flash light, a whistle, basic first aid and basic repair items. Let someone not in your group know where you are going. Mountain Biking at Holiday Valley provides access to the Holiday Valley Race Loop and WYNMBA Trails in McCarty State Forest and Rock City State Forest. Enjoy these great trails, from beginner to advanced along with spectatular views of the valley. Ride trails on the ridge and by Spruce Lake. Holiday Valley has mountain bikes and E bikes to rent. Looking for a quick way to the top of the moutain, Holiday Valley offeres lift services for you and your mountain bike to the top of the mountain on weekends by Spruce Lake!

To ride up the mountain, the 4-5 mile "race loop" starts at the Holiday Valley Training Center and climbs gradually to the top of Cindy's run. Enjoy the ridgeline trails and switchbacks to the trail network on NY state land with plenty of trails for most riders. At Eagle or Tannenbaum lift areas you can venture out across the logging roads behind the Valley and on to the 35+ miles of WYMBA trails in McCarty Hill State Forest and Rock City State Forest. Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster is located by the Tannenbaum area of Holiday Valley Resort. is similar to a roller coaster, but its built on a mountain. Riders are in a “car” on rails that follow a path down that spirals through turns while also zigzagging down the mountain. Riders are able to control their speed with brakes on the car. The coaster is open in the winter too! Individual rides, combo park passes and group rates are available. There are minimum age and height requirements to ride with an adult or individually.

Sky High Adventure park is located by the Tannenbaum area of Holiday Valley Resort. The aerial park is a series of platforms and “bridges” built in a 4 acre section of the woods. The platforms are built in the trees and the bridges connect the platforms. The bridge are logs, hanging chunks of wood, ropes or many other options and the challenge is to figure out how to get across to the next platform.

Some of the areas have zip lines . There are 4 levels of difficulty on 13 courses. There are age and weight guidlines for the courses. Check out this attraction! Various Aerial Park / Coaster pricing packages are available.

Sky High Adventure Park Climbing Forest is located by the Tannenbaum area of Holiday Valley Resort. The Climbing Forest is like a 3-D version of a climbing wall and the forest at Holiday Valley Resort is the only one of its kind in the United States. There are 10 trees outfitted with color coded climbing holds and the difficulty ranges from easy to challenging. Each climber is fitted with a harness that is clipped into an Auto Belay system. Once a climber reaches the top of the tree at up to 45 feet, they just let go and the belay system slowly lowers them to the ground. There is also a kids’ area with two trees where the youngest climbers can climb about 6 feet up and climb back down.

Western NY Mountabain Bike Assocation maintains and mapped over 100 miles of moutain bke trails in western New York that are available for self tours!. WNYMBA volunteers design, develop, and maintain trails across the State, working with every major recreation land manager. They often have group rides, so check out their website for locations and times.

When creating your own tour, print of their location map and directions to the state forest or location, as cell service may be limited in the areas. Paper maps are availabe at Bike & Bean, EVL Coffee and the Holiday Valley Main Lodge in Ellicottville. The regional trail maps near by are the Ellicotville map, Allegany State Park map and Golden Hill State Forest map. Snow Adventures


Western New York is known for its winter outdoor activites due to its abundance of lake effect snow that blankets the state forests, state parks, ski resorts annually. Winter thrill seekers and adventurers know this is the place to be in the east! There are three great ski resorts in the area and the state parks have an abundace of trails for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snow mobiling. The ski resorts average annual snowfall is 180 inches, from mother nature and modern snowmaking systems! That is why the ski resorts makes excellent places to downhill ski, snowboard, telemark or go snow tubing!

There are two ski resorts in downtown Ellicottville, NY and the 3rd great ski resort just 30 minutes north in Glenwood, NY. You can find all of your outdoor winter adventures right in western New York. The ski season usually runs late November through mid-March.

Art Roscoe Cross-Country Ski Area is located in the Red House area of Allegany State Park. They have an pristine groomed trail system for cross-country skiing and trails for snowshoeing. There are over 20 miles of double track cross-country ski trails! There is a warming hut outside the area map and trailhead that typcially has snowshoe rentals, cross-country ski rentals, snacks and beverages.

Snowshoeing is not permitted in the cross-country ski area but is perfect on the Bear Paw Trail, which starts just outside the warming hut. The 2.5 mile trail goes to the stone tower and back!

The facebook page updates current information by local trail riders. Bring you own equipment or they usually have rentals. Other local places in Ellicottville that rent cross-country skis and snowshoes are Holiday Valley Resort, Mud Sweat and Gears and Adventurebound on the Fly. The Red House Area typically has trails open December through February, depending on snow condiations. The cross-country ski area is located at 2373 ASP Route 1 Salamanca, NY 14779. Cross-country Ski and Snowshoe at Holiday Valley Resort until 3pm during the season. The crosscountry ski trails are along the top ridgeline of Holiday Valley and around the golf course at the bottom of the mountain for intermmediate skiers. Adventurous and experienced cross country skiers can make use of the miles and miles of mountain bike trails located in the state forest bordering Holiday Valley. These trails are not patrolled or maintained, so take all precautions of a responsible back country skier.

Snowshoeing areas are available on the lower slopes and on the golf course, just be sure to stay to the side of the cross country tracks. There are also some great trails around spruce lake, the ridgline and towards HoliMont. Enjoy some great trails, exercise and spectacular views. Enchanted Mountains Snowmobiling website list current trail maps, trail conditions for the 450 miles of snow mobile trails in Cattaragus County, NY! the trails run through Allegany State Park, Allegheny National Forest, McCarty State Forest, Rock City State Forest and beyond. Many of the trails run through the Allegany State Park, where they recommend group camp 5 if you have a larger group and want to camp in the park for direct access. Guest can also purchase a day pass for the State Park and stay in Ellicottville area lodging.

There are also snowmobile trails in the Allegheny National Forest, just south of the Allegany State Park - Red House Area. Many of the clubs have knowledge of the trails and condiations. Guided Snowshoing at Kissing Bridge Ski Resort offers guided snowshoe trail tours during the winter season as well as self guided trails. Snowshoe with your guided group and explore the designated trails and scenic views Kissing Bridge has to offer. Perfect for company outings/school groups, or your whole family. Holiday Valley Resort has many winter sports and services available, including downhill skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and more. Holiday Valley Resort has been ranked in the top 10 ski resorts in Eastern North America by Ski Magazine annually. The ski resort has 13 lifts and 58 slopes. The slopes have a 750 foot vertical drop and the longest run is 4,400 feet. Snowshoe around Spruce Lake and on the ridgeline!

The resort offers ski / snowboard lessons, equipment repairs, rental equipment, adaptive skiing and more. Their have many winter events and their lodges offer great food and beverages. Lift tickets can be purchased in advance and discounted tickets can be purchased with and overnight stay in HVRM propoerites at the rental office. Holiday Valley Tubing Company has 20 snow tubing lanes that are 900 feet long with a 100 vertical foot drop. Getting back to the top is easy with the conveyor lift. Just outside of Ellicottville, the snow tubing hill has hours of fun for all ages. There is minimum age/height requirements, and there is a special Little Tubers area is available, weather permitting, for younger children. There is a cozy warming hut is at the base of the hill with a snack bar, fireplace and restrooms. Tubers can also warm up and rest outside at the giant bonfire pit or two lean to's.

There is parking available at the Holiday Valley Tubing Company. The rental season is generally December through February. HoliMont is North America’s largest private ski area with 52 trails. The resort is open to the public Monday through Friday, so it a great oppourtunity check out the private ski resort slopes. HoliMont has downhill skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Along with some great slopes, the resort has excellent terrain parks and a half pipe!

HoliMont has 9 lifts with 52 trails. The slopes have a 700 foot vertical drop and the longest run is 4,000 feet. Their season is usally late November through mid - March. Ischua Valley Country Club maintains 53 miles of snowmobile trails Arcade, NY to West Valley, NY to Ellicottville, NY. Patron and trailer parking is availabe at the country club. For information on snowmobiling at Ischua Valley Country Club, visit the Franklinville Snowmobile Club website.

Afterwards snowmobiling, enjoy warming up with a meal or beverage at the restaurant or bowl a few games at their hardwood bowling alley! The country club is open to members and guests. Kissing Bridge Ski Resort has 39 slopes spread out over 700 acres and serviced by 9 lifts. There’s lots of great terrain perfect for the beginner or intermediate skier or rider, plus several challenging slopes for advanced. The slopes have a a 600 foot vertical drop and have several terrain parks for snow boarding. The resort offers ski lessons, rental equipment, adaptive programs, childrens programs, guided snowshoe trail tours, winter events with live music and more.

Snow Bounders Snowmobile Club maintains trails that pass through the following townships: Salamanca, Little Valley, Napoli, New Albion, Mansfield, Otto, E. Otto, Ashford and Great Valley. Trails are maintained and marked by club members and some trails may be on private property. Please respect landowners, as without them, the club would have no trails to ride!

Golf Courses


Plan a golf weekend. There are three scenic 18-hole and three 9-hole golf courses within 18 miles of Ellicottville. The Double Black Diamond golf course and Phil Ritson—Mel Sole Golf School are at in town at Holiday Valley Resort. Elkdale Country Club is a beautify course, has fantastic food and the private country club can be played with advance reservations. Finally, Concord Crest Golf Course provide great golf at a reasonable price with fantastic customer service and is located 3o mintues north in East Concord, NY. All of the course are well run and are challenging.

Birch Run Golf Club is a challenging 9 hole golf course that opened in 1954. The club is located 16 miles from downtown Ellicottville in Allegany, NY. The greens are tough to read and fast. There is a creek that comes into play on two holes and the course has well placed bunkers. They also offer golf lessons, have a golf shop and a restaurant. There are 4 sets of tee boxes at each whole, to offer different play on the course.

Concord Crest Golf Course is and 18 hole course located in East Concord, New York; at the foothills of the Allegheny mountains. The golf course opened in 2001 and is located about 16 miles from downtown Eillicottville, NY. The course has rolling hills, wetlands, creek and ponds carved out of a family farm.

The New York State Bluebird Society has chosen the course to be part of the statewide “Bluebird Trail.” Birdhouses around the course attract the bluebirds, and many details around the course are reminiscent of birdhouses as well.

Double Black Diamond Golf Course at Holiday Valley is located in Ellicottville, NY. The 18 hole golf course measures approximately 6500 yards, but plays the equivalent of a longer course with the combination of well-watered fairways and terrain variations extending the 18 holes. The course is challenging as was nominated as one of the best re-designs in Golf Magazine 09. The slope from the double black diamond tees is 126, black is 121, blue 115 and green 118. There is a driving range and practice tees are available the course. You can also take lessons at the Phil Ritson—Mel Sol golf school. Lodging and golfing packages are availalbe at Holiday Valley Rental Managment properties, which includes Wildflower unit 55!

Elkdale Country Club is a semi-private 18 hole golf course located in Salamanca, NY, approximately 10 minutes away from Ellicottville. Elkdale golf course is available for public play every day with a reservation. Corporate outings or group outings can be made in advance. There is a driving range available.

Nestled in the rolling hills of New York's Southern Tier, Elkdale Country club offers a challenging 18-hole golf course, beautiful scenery and the Elkdale Bar & Grill with dine or or to go services at the turn. Ischua Valley Country Club is a 9 hole golf course that opened in 1970. This beautiful golf course is for all skill levels with wonderaful scenery along the hillside landscapes and Ischua Creek. The country club is located in Franklinville, NY and 11 miles from downtown Ellicottville. This is a great day trip as they have an in house hard wood bowling alley and full services restaurant and bar in the club.

St. Bonaventure Golf Course is a 9 hole golf course that has been open since 1929 and is the home golf course for St. Bonaventure University. This established golf course has great play and is open for the university students and the public. Play 9 or 18 holes with or without a cart. St. Bonaventure golf course is 18 miles from Ellicottville and is a great value, being a university golf course.

Water Adventures


There are many outfitters that offer tours or rental equipment for water adventures surrounding Ellicottville in the lakes, streams, rivers and resevoirs. Adventure Calls Outfitters offers 5 and 1/2 mile rafting trips down the Gennesee river in Letchorth State Park. Rafter will experience class I and II rapids in the early season, paddling through “The Grand Canyon of the East”! The 600 foot high cliffs and beauty of Letchworth State Park provides memories that will last a lifetime The rafting tours is the perfect trip for first-time rafters, youth groups, and families with children.

The white water season is mid March through May and takes about two hours, and the trip takes a little longer during the summer months since the river is a little slower and they use inflatable sit-on-top kayaks for the tour. Body surf down the "New Wave Rapids" or get soaked in the "Leap of Faith". They also offer rafting & barbaque packages as well as rafing and camping packages. Quaker Lake in the Quaker Run Area of Allegany State Park has kayak rentals, paddel boat rentals, a boat launch, fishing and swimming. Quaker lake had an amazing beach area with kayak and paddle boat rentals for the lake at the beach house. Friends boat launch is also in the area to launch personal watercraft to the Allegany resevior. Finally, Science lake is stocked and wild trout for fishing as well as many of the rivers that run through the area in Allegany State Park. Visit the park website for fees and more information.

Red House Lake in the Red House Area of Allegany State park has kayak rentals, canoe rentals, paddel boat rentals, fishing and swimming at the beach. Science Lake in the Quaker Run Area of Allegany State Park has two fishing piers. Science lake is stocked and wild trout for fishing as well as many of the rivers that run through the area Quaker Run area in Allegany State Park. Visit the park website for fees and more information.

Zoar Valley Canoe & Rafting offers two white water rafting on the mighty Cattaraugus, through Zoar Valley. The cattaragus creek runs carves through rugged cliffs 1 hundred feet high and past free falling and hidden waterfalls. Rafters will experience the finest white water west of the Adirondacks. The adventurous tour is 10 miles of white water with class I, II and III rapids and takes about 2 to 4 hours. The lower portion is a little more tame with class I and II rapids, takes approximately 6 hours.
